South Fork Fishing Report January 17th

[flv:/Videos/report-jan182010.flv 480 368]

I missed posting on Monday the 17th because we headed out on the river. We floated our regular winter section, Heise to Lorenzo.  Fishing totally with streamers we managed to land 48 fish.  The action was a bit slower than the last trip we took, but we still caught a good number of nice fish.  No monsters this trip however. The biggest fish was 19 inches. The weather was cloudy and the air temperature was around 35 all day. This made for near perfect conditions.  We had no ice in our guides and stayed very comfortable all day.  The best patterns were olive and chartreuse streamers for the most part, but late in the day we switched to a white fish pattern and landed a number of nice fish as soon as we changed flies.  We even landed one brown on this pattern that had a real white fish hanging out of his mouth.  The weather looks good for the next few days, so get out on the river. Next week it looks like temps will dip down below freezing again so get up and go now.

Cold Weather Hurts Florida Fish

The recent cold spell that hit the State of Florida has had a major impact on the saltwater fish that we all love to chase in the Sunshine State.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has banned fishing for snook until September 1st and bonefish and tarpon until April 1st. Plan your saltwater trips accordingly.

Our hearts go out to all the guides and other industries in the area that depend on the fish for their livings. Let us all hope that things can turn around quickly for both the fish and the people that depend on them.

Happy New Year

IMGP0523

We started out the new year in a BIG way. That is to say Adam did. Randy, Brian and Adam headed down the Lower Lower South Fork on the 2nd for the first trip of the new year. Fishing all streamers, the boys landed around 60 fish with several nice 18 – 19 inch browns landed. But it was Adam that got the fish of the day, and the year for that matter. Around 2:00 in the afternoon he placed a nice cast across a big gravel flat and hooked into the beauty. After a good fight we stuck it on the Boga Grip and weighed him in at 7 LBS! With a quick measurement on the tape we saw that he was 25″ in length! What a great fish! If this is any indication of what we are all in store for in the 2010 season hold on to your hats. Happy New Year to all of you and good fishing in the 2010 season. Check back tomorrow for the video of the first trip of the year.

Idaho Fish and Game Teton River Electrofishing Report 2009

The following teton river fishing reports are from the two sections of river directly below the Lodge.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game surveyed reaches of the Teton River during the fall of 2009. Although preliminary and subject to change, the results from these surveys are shown below. The following figures summarize trout abundance and composition at the Nickerson, Rainier, monitoring reaches on the the Teton River as well as prior estimates in the same reaches.

File_002
Nickerson Reach- In 2009, all trout species increased in abundance at the Nickerson monitoring reach on the Teton River with statistically significant increases observed for Yellowstone cutthroat trout and rainbow trout over 2007 estimates. The 2009 estimate of brook trout abundance was higher than in 2007, but wide confidence bounds around estimates from both years make determining a statistical difference impossible. Yellowstone cutthroat trout are showing a welcome increase in abundance in this reach and are currently at their highest abundance since the mid-1990’s. Further, densities of all trout combined are at their highest level recorded since sampling first begain in 1987.

Rainier Reach- Electrofishing surveys were last conducted in the Rainier Reach in 2000. Since this last survey, there have been changes in trout populations riverwide, as well as habitat changes within the Rainier Reach itself. Both of these factors have the ability to influence trout abundance. Between 2000 and 2009, there was a significant increase in rainbow trout abundance while Yellowstone cutthroat trout abundance increased slightly. We were unable to estimate brook trout abundance due to low numbers of recaptured marked fish. Overall trout densities are high, relative to prior samples.

Farmed Salmon – Something to Think About

This video was sent to us by the AFFTA. Look at it and see what you think. It sounds like these salmon farms are a real problem. It is hard to know if this is the whole story, but if you take it at face value these things are very harmful. It is something to think about.

November Fishing Report

This video pretty much sums up how the river is fishing right now. It is out of sight!
