The weather as turned cold in Teton Valley, as it as over much of the country. The last two weeks have seen highs at or around 0 degrees. The Teton has been frozen solid for that time and there has given me little initiative to go outside for any reason at all. But starting on the 11th we saw some relief to the never ending cold. Friday was in the low teens and Saturday ended up to be in the high 20′s. After almost two weeks with out fishing I just had to get out on the river. For this float we put in at Heise and floated to Twin Bridges. This would be a very short float in the summer, but the flows on the river are much lower and it made for almost a perfect distance. The fishing was good, not great. We caught fish all day, but not with as much consistency as in weeks past. Adam did catch a nice 5 pound brown that measured in at 23.5 inches. It was our 4 fish of the day and it was a great fish. Almost every thing we caught was on a streamer, and the weather and temperature felt quite nice after all the cold that we have had.

2009 was a great year for big fish. From early on the Henry’s Fork throughout the month of November, Teton Valley Lodge guests landed some great fish. This slide show displays some of the big ones land this past season.
Each year we are proud to hold 4 big fish contests. These are not truly competitions but rather gives every guest at the lodge the sporting chance for bragging rights as well as a prize of a free trip in the following season. That’s right, we give away free trips! For each winner a free trip of three days is given for the upcoming season. I don’t know if the trip or the bragging rights drives more people to win, but we have several guests with their eye on the prize each year.
The season starts out with the May June contest. We are mostly fishing the Henry’s Fork this time of year. Big fish like big flies and often the big fish take a salmon fly from somewhere on the Fork. The next contest is the Upper Teton Contest. This contest consists of only the Teton River that we access from the Lodge with out Teton Boats. This contest runs the entire season. We never know who has won this one until the last day of the year. Every day on this stream could end with a big fish. We then move into the September October contest. This is usually won with a streamer either on the South Fork or the Henry’s Fork. And then the big daddy is the Season Big Fish Contest. The biggest fish of the entire season is the biggest prize.
This is where the true bragging rights come into play. This season it was won by Ed Isbey Jr. His 29″ 9.5 lbs cuttbow was caught on the Upper South Fork in mid July. Congratulations to Ed and all the other winners of 2009. We can’t wait for next year when we can hunt for those big fish with you all again.
These are just of a few of the big fish caught by John Short and Mary Wilkes with Head Guide Tom Fenger the other day. There are some real monsters out on the river right now.
Adam Berry with an 8 pound Rainbow from some where in Idaho.
The South Fork just keeps on fishing great. This video is of the Lower South Fork on Saturday the 7th. The largest fish landed was 24 inch brown. On the same day we had a boat land two 26 inch fish on a different section of the river. I can’t wait to get back over there and hunt for another pig. Good fishing to all.
I wanted to let you know what a great time we had at the lodge. Everyone enjoyed the fishing, the lodge, food and guides. From the beginers to those that had fished before, everyone caught fish and enjoyed themselves. I personally enjoyed fishing with your dad, that was a good time, and the Narrows fishing with Brian was a treat too. I have wanted to fish that section for a long time. Hunter Ford I would like to say “WOW!” My son Andrew and I had a marvelous time again this year and the fishing was simply awesome. I would like to commend our guide, Jonathan Murray, on his knowledge, candor, and help in making our trip one of the best ever. Terry Wilkerson I could not have imagined a greater experience for outstanding fishing, wonderful patience on your part teaching me to fly fish, and above all, world class service. My family and friends have heard about every minute and we are making plans to come again next year. The adrenaline rush of dry fly fishing is addictive and becoming an obsession. Rex Baldwin I have just returned from a trip to your lodge. Having never fly fished before, I was a bit leary of it, but I am happy to report that you guys have made a lifetime enthusiast out of me. Me and my two sisters and father enjoyed the daily trips on the river and the fishing turned out to be one of the best family outings our family has encountered. Staci Eagle Outstanding day I was put on dozens of fish! The South Fork truly is one of the best fly fishing waters one could experience. My guide worked hard to make sure he was meeting my needs. You and your team have out done yourselves again. Rex Baldwin Bob Hanke and I have been coming to your lodge for something like 25 years. We’ve always had excellent fishing results and have never had a bad trip. However, the trip we had this year to the Henry’s Fork, specifically Bear Gulch, has got to be the best fishing day I have ever had, and I think Bob agrees. G.R. Post The combination of gorgeous scenery, your excellent staff’s efforts to please, and great fishing make it tough to imagine a more memorable and enjoyable experience. Tim Buckley I will never forget the day spent with you on the Middle Narrows! Forty-four fish before stopping for lunch and seventy by the end of the day!! What an unbelievable experience! Dale Geisleman Your lodge was simply just great. We have spent time in a lot of places over the years but TVL has to rate at the top of the list for overall comfort and layout. It was just ideal for the fishing trip we had planned. Bill Hubbard I really needed the time away to relax and charge my batteries again, and the great outdoors you call home in Idaho really did the trick…I didn’t want to leave:) the beauty and stillness was one of the best trips I have gone on with Sysco…and I have been on a lot during my 11 years, this one was the BEST! Dave Felix We were all impressed by the quality of your guides. We have never experienced a group of individuals so committed to making our visit the most it could be for us. They were great instructors, coaches and guides. For that, you have our great appreciation and admiration. Bill Hubbard I just want to thank you again for all of your, Matt’s, Brian’s and everyone’s help and support for the Blue Ridge meeting. The fishing was great and all of you were great. Thanks. Have a good winter and we look forward to next year. John Cohen |
