Flies rusted? CLR it.

I really hate it when my flies get rusted.  Last June, we had what seemed like three straight weeks of rain.  Not our usual weather.  No matter what you tried to keep your flies dry, they would just get wet, and stay wet.

I use the meiho box with a gasket for my nymphs and really like the box.  However, myflies were still getting wet with the constant downpour.

Frustrated, and not wanting to dump the flies in the trash, I thought there must be a way to clean them up.  Then I remembered the CLR under the sink.  We use it for the terrible water stains we get from our well water.  I put a small amount in a bowl and placed a few flies in.  I figured they were near ruined anyway, why not try?  Sure enough the CLR cleaned them right up.  Just dump the flies out on a paper towel and then rinse them off.  The flies were nearly brand new.

A great little tip to save your flies and your wallet.

Book Review – Emergers by Doug Swisher and Carl Richards

IMGP0502

There are a lot of books out there on the sport of fly fishing. The ones I find most interesting are on the subject of fish food. Mainly insects and their life cycles. As I tied Mayfly Cripple patters for several days last week I thought about the insects that the patterns were trying to imitate. That is what brought me to read this book. Loaded with information about almost all the important hatches in our area, I found this book to be a great read. I would suggest it to any one at any level of angling experience. This book gives the reader a comprehensive understanding of the life cycles of Mayflies, Caddis, Stoneflies, Midges and more. While I don’t totally agree with all of the authors technique suggestions, I felt that the book was well worth the time. It is an easy read, I did it in one night. During the off season it is a great idea to take the time to read these kinds of books to improve your understanding of the fish that we are all pursuing. I know I have a lot to learn and am grateful to authors of these informative books. Check it out.

Cutthroat Candy

Curtis Creek Manifesto

I still remember getting this book from my dad as a gift when I was a boy.  I can’t tell you how many times I read it and carefully colored all the illustrations.  It was one of my favorite books as a young boy.

The book still has a place in my home.  I read it this morning.  Sheridan Anderson truly was a talented guy.  I wish he was still around to delight us with his wit.

If  you don’t have this great little book, get it now.  Don’t let the illustrations fool you, this book is not just for kids.  Fisherman of all ages will enjoy it.

Fish Baseball

So what happens when you want to go fishing together with a couple of your buddies?  Do you end up rowing the whole day?  Try Fish Baseball.  This is not quite as gruesome as Bunny Baseball made famous in Mud Lake Idaho in 1981.  However, both make perfect sense.

779738_99c0_625x1000The rules are simple.  Either fishermen, front of boat or back, each get three fish or two strikes.  Then they rotate to the rowing seat.  It is very simple and fun.  It keeps you on your toes.  No one wants to miss two fish rather than catch three.  Competition takes place when both fishermen have two fish on their tally.  The race is on to get the third fish.  If you get it first, you only have a short while to wait for the other guy to catch his one fish to make three.

Give it a try.
