Recent Catches

A few photos of some recent catches and some happy fly fishermen.  The South Fork and Henrys Fork are both fishing well.  The South Fork is high but we are catching good numbers of fish.  Several anglers have stated they have caught more fish this season than any other.  The Henrys Fork is having terrific bug hatches of green drakes, golden stones, mayflies and caddis.

River Conditions Looking Good

south fork river conditions

Have you heard the rivers in our area are blown out?  Well they aren’t.  The South Fork is flowing at or near it’s historical mean.  The river fished quite well, on 6/29/11, even better than the Henry’s Fork. Small and medium sized golden stoneflies are beginning to hatch.

henrys fork river conditions

The Henrys Fork is flowing higher than its average for this time of year, but that is a good thing.  The Henry’s Fork for several years has been lower than ideal at this time of year.  The level of the river right now is fantastic.

teton river conditions

The only river right now that is quite high is the Teton River.  It is still not as high as it was in 1997.  We don’t plan on fishing much on the Teton in the next week.  There are however a couple stretches fishing ok right now.

Boat capsizes on the Snake River, fishing guide missing

KIDK News

Our prayers go out to the guide and his family.  May he return safely.

SWAN VALLEY – The Bonneville County Search and Rescue team has called off the search Wednesday night for a man missing from a capsized boat.

Just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Spring Creek Boat landing near Swan Valley, three people were floating in a drift boat when it reportedly hit some willow branches and flipped over, spilling the three into the Snake River. One couple made it out, the third, a man in his mid-40′s has not been found.

According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, the missing man is a fishing guide and is used to being on the water.

No information has been released on the identities of the people involved.

The search will resume Thursday morning at 7 a.m.

The big boys are out on the South Fork of the Snake.  Both these monsters ate dry flies.  The river is alive with not only big trout, but lots of fish too.

South Fork Snake River Fishing Report June 3 2010

Jason Terry. Second day fishing. Personal double.

Despite the wet and windy weather, fishing has been great on the South Fork.  Water conditions are good.  Water color is not bad at all.  We are catching fish on both nymphs and streamers.

Jason had a great day on the river.  It was only his second day and had been fishing dry on the Henry’s Fork the previous day.  He transitioned nicely to the nymph rig and caught the heck out of em.

Biblical grasshopper hatch this summer

If you like grasshoppers, this is the year.  The United States Department of Agriculture is reporting that 2010 will have the largest grasshopper population since 1985.  Bad news for the farmers, unfortunately.  However, for us fly fisherman, it should be epic big dry fly fishing on the South Fork of the Snake and Teton rivers here in Idaho.  I can’t wait for late July and August to catch some lunker trout on big hoppers.

Following is a portion of an article by Field and Stream…

It seems like ranchers and farmers in the West can’t get a break. From drought, to hail, to floods, and fires, they’re always dealing with some natural disaster.  In 2010, the impending plague involves grasshoppers.  In fact, the United States Department of Agriculture predicts that certain states like Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming will see the largest infestation of grasshoppers in 25 years or more.  Only an unusually damp and cool late spring might stem the impending problem.  And that doesn’t appear to be happening.  Read the rest of the story here.
